Outer Banks Vacation: What to Do

Share

Most people visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina for their beaches, however there is a lot more to do that just hitting the sand! Read about my family's visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial on a beautiful June day. Over 100 years ago, history was forever changed when two brothers did the unthinkable. After hard work and determination, they achieved the first flight in their flying machine. They did this on a hill called Kill Devil hill. Today, visitors can visit this spot and walk in the very same steps as Wilber and Orville Wright. The Wright Brothers National Memorial is open 7 days a week from 9-5, year round, and admission is only $4 for ages 16 and up. Those 15 and under are free! Once you enter the park, there is an indoor visitor center that showcases different exhibits and tells the Wright’s story. It also holds a full scale reproduction of a 1902 glider.  After you leave the visitor center, you can walk the exact course of the flight with boulders marking the spots of the various attempts of flight. Then it’s time to make your way to the 60 ft monument. For my family, this was the best part! The walk up Kill Devil Hill is steep. I mean steep! It’s worth it though because once you make it to the top the view will certainly take your breath away. You can see for miles! This park is definitely worth the visit! Heck, I live here and I still like to visit at least once a year. Not only is it amazing but inspiriting as well, to think about how much that short flight changed the world!
